June Film and Discussion Series - History and Place: Local Interpretations

To most living in South Bend, the city is a place to work, a place to enjoy friends and family and – depending on who you talk to – either a dying city, or a city on the rise. How did we as a city become what we are today and how can we work together to build a tomorrow that is inclusive, productive, and full of potential?

Those with a discerning eye look to the voices of our past and listen closely to those in the present to imagine our future. In June 2017, LangLab presents a film series that examines a sense of place through different types of artistic explorations. Join us on Tuesday evenings to screen locally-produced films that focus on interpretations of place through visual arts and theater.

All showings begin at 7:30pm in the LangLab gallery and are free of charge. Doors will open at 7pm and a cash bar will be available to those 21 and over. Each film series will run between 90-120 minutes and will be followed by a short Q&A session with those representing the film.

A final discussion of the concepts raised by each film and fundraiser for the distribution of the filmed theater production Heartland: The Civil War will be held on Saturday July 1, beginning at 7pm.

Tuesday 6/13: Voices of the Present

The Citizen Project, Presented by Ultreia, Inc.

Summary:

Presented at LangLab in the summer of 2016, The Citizen Project used theater and interpretation as a mirror, empowering the residents of South Bend to define the city by sharing their stories. Through a series of 20 interviews, a wholly unique script was developed, in an attempt to spark curiosity and deeper investigations into local issues.

Tuesday 6/27: Our History Through Story

Heartland: The Civil War, Presented by Lifetime Education and Research Network (LERN)

Summary:

This theater production-turned-film presents a docudrama of eleven South Bend, Mishawaka, and

Elkhart individuals from the start of The Civil War through 1890. It explores an account of the founding historical figures of our area using non-fiction source material and research.
